Overheard in New York
You can read more overheard NYC conversations at the original site.
I think the Tweeting trend is pretty much over, but you can still find me there.

a raven carrying a pancake
It's a good omen according to my buddy Chris who wrote about seeing this very thing in his wonderful cooking blog. Visit him and look at all the gorgeous food photos -- just don't go when your stomach is empty and there's nothing in your refrigerator except pizza crusts and expired mustard.

shit my dad says
No, not my dad. There's a guy on twitter who posts his father's angry, expletive-laden rants and they are often hilarious. What's not funny is how much I relate to this 73 year-old man. I have plenty of the same focused and unfocused outrage and I'm three decades younger than he is. Yikes. If you want to check out his other rants, go here.

TFLN 2/15
I'll try to keep the "innapropriate" language to a minimum on this blog, but sometimes you really can't help but love how crude the quotes on texts from last night are.

blind date
I discovered earlier this week that walruses (walri?) are pretty fun to draw. I'll go through stages where I'll draw one thing for months until I get sick of it. I actually have one sketchbook somewhere that's half-filled with little rabbit cartoons. And then I drew pears for two years. If there's a medication for this kind of behaviour I don't think I'd take it.

Overheard in New York
Another source of great material is this website which logs bits of conversation picked up on the streets of New York. You can't write this stuff. Well, I can't anyway.

doodle diary 2/11/10
I didn't have any new material for today, so I went back through some notebooks and pulled out doodles I've done in meetings or while waiting in the dentist's office or just during those times when my hand needed to push a pen around without a definite plan. I guess they are sorta revealing in their own way which is why I called this post "doodle diary". Expect more of these if I get bogged down at work or if good old fashioned 'writer's block' sets in.

alien reader
There's probably a name for people who have a fear of books, but I don't know what it is. I just know I suffer from it to a degree. I'm always afraid I'll open a book and not understand a single word. I'm afraid of being lost and feeling stupid. I wish I knew where this fear came from. Maybe it's from some homework/school trauma I've blocked out. I grew up never reading books for pleasure because I didn't want to feel like a dumb little alien in a world of big words I couldn't understand. I stuck mostly to Mad magazine and cartoon anthologies. Horror fiction of the 70's and 80's helped me make friends with books again because I still loved a good scare and wasn't allowed to watch scary movies. Jay Anson's The Amityville Horror and all of Stephen King's early work helped me realize I wasn't stupid or illiterate after all. Still -- the fear has never completely left me.
I dread starting new books even though I know there's a good chance I'll love them once I get into them. Perhaps this is another reason I'm an avid re-reader. There are a handful of novels I've reread twenty times and Just in Case is one of them. I picked it up from a discount rack at Walden's and bought it mainly because it has a greyhound on the cover and because of the blurb describing it as a 'modern day Catcher in the Rye'. It's a beautiful, weird and genius piece of fiction that I can't recommend highly enough. You can probably find it pretty cheap online. Please try and get your very own copy and then never let it go.

Another Nosebleed Girl comic!
Okay. I really don't want Nosebleed Girl to wear out her welcome in two days, so I'll give her a rest for awhile. I just like this because it reminds me of the sick little cartoons I used to draw in fifth or sixth grade. I gave a whole grocery sack full of drawings to this girl I liked and she got in trouble for bringing them home to show to her very religious parents. Yes, I was pissing off Christians even back then. Oh well.

TFLN
If you've never been to "texts from last night" you should go there immediately. It's a collection of drunken, stoned, horny or just plain stupid texts young people send to each other that they may later regret. A typical entry is seen above. I collect some good lines from there and keep files of my favorites -- especially those that really cry out for illustrations. It's a good source for bizarre one-liners.
I read these and realize how wholesome I actually was in my twenties...and how boring and safe my life is now. The site contains very adult language, but there are no photos which is probably a good thing.
