I didn't do any of these at my school either. We didn't even have a gym.

I've done 1,2,3. But never on TV...
I can SO remember the vitriolic & pompous girls in my high school gym classes. Paula wasn't missing anything.

I didn't do any of these things either . . . but my kids did all of them. I enjoyed them vicariosly. It was probably more fun for me that way.

Ha ha Toon, until now I've always pictured you growing up in a small town in Wisconsin (like me)!
I did have to climb the rope in gym (not as tough as it looks), and yeah lemonade stands...that seemed like a TV thing to me, too. Science fair?! That had to be a sitcom thing, also (me and my friends were always too busy "boozin' school"--local slang for skipping out--to even have a clue about intramural stuff.
Now I feel all nostalgic...

'... live on a 'road'.'

In my days of annoyance, I used to tease the kids who lived on roads in some of the unincorporate areas in the Metro. Strange to have seen how much development has went on and equally strange to see how some places were passed over.

I would have thought science fairs were big in Kansas. From finding new ways to use fetilizer to making moonshine, using chemistry and such would have been huge.

Read books, comics and caught up on homework beneath the covers as a kid.

Gym class was mildly frustrating. I was a good enough athelete to compete with all the jocks and supposedly cool kids. Never earned me any props, though.

Let's see... we din't have the rope thing in our gym but we did have the MUCH MORE DANGEROUS balance beam where one is expected to do all sorts of flowy movements along a 2 inch (or something) board that's 4 feet (or something) off of the ground. I always fell off and those floor mats never kept my head from getting lumps. The only thing I'm regretful that we didn't have to use helmets for.
I DID have a lemonade stand, but no one ever bought anything. I was only allowed to stay out for about 30 minutes because Ma said the sun had made the lemonade "go bad" by then and it would poison people.
We had science fair's in high school but I never entered. It wasn't mandatory. TODAY I'd be all over it but back then I was the schools music maker and was always doing the theater stuff.
And yes, I read EVERYTHING under the covers with a flashlight. Just about every night. Can't remember where on earth I ever would have gotten a flashlight from at the young age I started it. Or where I got the idea from (I mean, lots of kids do this and I don't think they hear about it from other kids first --at least not back then). Once in awhile I'd get caught. I never got in trouble, I just got the flashlight taken away by my mother and told to go to sleep and then my father would say, "Why did we ever allow her to learn to read?" I must have had an endless supply flashlights because sometimes I'd start back up again that same night if the book was really good.
This was a FABULOUSLY FUN toon, dude. Brought back all kinds of memories!

i love the illustrations that manage to capture an entire story, with one simple distillation, like the hand on the rope! cool!
