:) Makes me think of all the roach infested places I lived in- like the time the toilet from the apartment upstairs came crashing down into our's at 3 AM...I came out of that era alive?
Ooh, yes, the crappy places we've lived when young. But the memories are so good because it was all about freedom and independence. I love the way you said this. -Cin
Our first tacky apartment had maroon wallpaper in the kitchen with big white birds on it. I do not miss it but do have lots of memories like teaching my bird to talk and the neighbor girls mocking me. lol Oh boy you opened a can of birds with this one.
Not only are these always interesting & entertaining(and often touching) but you always seem to choose avenues that circumvent the typical approach. ~Mary xoxoxo
There is something that seeps into your character when you are young and starting out in a place like that. When I think about some of the neighborhoods that I would run through late at night and in the early morning dark, I feel 'tougher' for having done so.
Talking about the manager hitting on you... dude, I have been there, done that as well!! My last apartment in the Palmer Park area of the Motor was also an enclave where a lot of cats 'in the club' lived as well. One of them was the my building manager and he kept giving me the once over..! I used to tell Tee Jay that I was so pretty that even the guys want to date me!!
Truth be told, the sketchiest neighborhood I ever lived in was where my Dad house is... but being from Detroit is really enough... I get not only bonus points for that but an extra game credit..!
This post really brought back memories from my first apartment in Hutch (2nd floor of a really big old kinda creepy but kinda cool house) and then some interesting places when I moved to Denver.
You just described my first BF's apartment, where walking up the stairs could be an adventure. Exciting, but I'm gald its over (the relationship and having to visit him there!)

First places are very cool - even if they're Hell-holes. :P
almost makes me nostalgic for my hooker neighbors....

It is amazing how what is bad when we are there becomes nostalgic as we move through life. Our minds are amazing things.

Except for the broken crack pipes (I predate crack), that sounds a lot like my first apartment... oh, and nobody hit on me.

Hit you or "hit on" you? ;)
Our first apartments, like our first lovers, tend to stay with us forever.
